Link-King
A downloadable game
Link-King is a short abstract game for two players. It has been designed to fit onto one sheet of double-sided A4, and is meant to replicate the benefits of chess (and similar games) with a lower barrier to entry.
A full rules document has been created, and some sample puzzles have been made to help teach the rules to new players. I intend to add in more puzzles in the future
It's easy to learn and hard to master, and can be played with any chess or draughts set. You can also print and play using the zine. For the full rules, download the game below.
Both players have two "Kings" sat in opposite corners of a 6 by 6 grid. The goal is to link the Kings by creating a chain of Pawns. Each turn a player can :
- Place a pawn,
- Move a pawn (up, down, left and right one square),
- Capture opposing pawns by jumping over them (using a King or Pawn). You can even chain jumps together to capture multiple pawns at once.
When a pawn is removed from the board, the player can place it again on a subsequent turn. This creates an elegant game loop about managing resources and space with only a few simple rules.
